NU SEDS Professor and Student Create Milestone as Presenters at International Conference on Unsaturated Soils

The 8th International Conference on Unsaturated Soils, themed "Towards Unsaturated Soils Engineering" was held at the George Iliopoulos Conference Centre on the Island of Milos, Greece, from May 2nd to 6th, 2023. The event was organized by the Hellenic Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (HSSMGE).

The Conference saw participation from over two hundred attendees, and it featured more than one hundred and fifty papers in the Proceedings. Additionally, the Proceedings included written versions of 8 Keynote Lectures, 1 plenary lecture, and the 3rd Blight Lecture.

Professor Alfredo Satyanaga from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering presented two technical papers: "Effect of slope geometry on slope stability in Almaty" and "The importance of unsaturated soil properties in the development of slope susceptibility maps". These papers were co-authored with Professors Jong Kim and Sung-Woo Moon, along with Master Students Rezat Abishev and Assylanbek Sharipov.

Gulnur Pernebekova, a Master's Student from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, successfully presented her technical paper titled "Water characteristic curve and permeability function of recycled concrete aggregate" under the guidance of Professors Alfredo Satyanaga and Jong Kim.

The joint presentation by Professor Alfredo Satyanaga and Gulnur Pernebekova ffrom Nazarbayev University's School of Engineering and Digital Sciences marked the first instance in Kazakhstan's history where faculty and a student had the opportunity to present at this esteemed unsaturated Conference.
