NU “women in engineering” club plans bold movements
A new social club called, “NU women in engineering” kicked off its first meeting on January 30 at Nazarbayev University. The club is dedicated to popularize the women role in engineering particularly in Kazakhstan and around the world.
“Mostly, women are often under-represented in the field of engineering due to the stereotypical perception “engineering is dominated by men’’. However, throughout the history of humankind and currently, women’s contribution to the field of engineering is significant. Today, most of the global organizations that operating in the field of engineering are eager to hire females because of their specific skills that modern engineering needs” – Madina Mulukova, the president of the club.
In addition, Mariza Tsakalerou, an assistant professor of civil and environment engineering department was invited to be a guest speaker at the event. “It is quite impressive to hear such speech from global leaders like Barack Obama about women empowerment and women leadership around the globe. And, I think it is our time to shine in engineering as well” – claimed, Mariza Tsakalerou. Moreover, Mariza shared her own experience in international settings for the club members and motivated them.
The club plans to be a platform with many functions like developing networking for the future and current women in engineering, promoting engineering as a potential career path for women, involving guest speakers to share their experience as well as promoting women leadership.
