Online presentation Rolls-Royce: Pioneers of Power

RR presentation

In September 2020 NU community had a brilliant opportunity to participate in the online presentation “Rolls-Royce: Pioneers of power”. Professor Essam Shehab, Head of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department in the School of Engineering and Digital Sciences, organized the open-talk with Mark Halliwell from Rolls-Royce plc.

Following a period as Program Executive for the Rolls-Royce Engineering Resourcing Strategy, Mark took the role of Chief Audit Engineer within the Technical Assurance Group of Rolls-Royce plc which provides technical assurance across Civil Aerospace, Defense, Power Systems and technology programs in Rolls-Royce. In 2006, Mark took the role of Head of Business Development and Improvement for the new Engineering Systems & Services organization, including leading the global integration of Engineering Technology groups.

Mark presented to the event participants the story of Rolls-Royce company, its structure and world-class engineering projects. The business can be divided into 3 main groups: civil aerospace, defense and power systems. Within the over 50 000 employees, about a third of those are engineers.

The participants also discovered the career opportunities in a global technology business with 50,000 people operating across 50 countries. Working and having an internship in a pre-eminent engineering company that focused on world-class power and propulsion systems, gives the invaluable opportunity to the personal growth as a specialist. There are different possibilities in Rolls-Royce – internship, graduate programs and direct entry. Mark encouraged the students to apply to Rolls-Royce via website

In the end of the presentation, the participants asked questions to Mark. The participants wanted to know more about the company and working possibilities. One of the students asked interesting question what does Mark value or appreciate in applicants– is it GPA, research that matters. Mark replied that there are 2 prime things:

  1. Good technical background – as working in a high technology company it is important to have people with strong technical capabilities;
  2. Great attitude – to be willing to try, to be positive, to be a team worker, to be those who want to make things better, hardworking.

The presentation was interesting to students, it showed that the engineers can do great things all over the world in the leading companies.
