The China-Kazakhstan Partnership Institute recently announced the results of its research exchange program, awarding three out of its ten grants to Nazarbayev University (NU). The projects, all from the School of Engineering and Digital Sciences (SEDS), are led by professors Zhanat Kappasov, Gulnur Kalimuldina, and Annie Ng, marking a significant achievement for both the university and Kazakhstan's scientific community.
The awarded projects aim to strengthen bilateral research collaboration between China and Kazakhstan, supporting initiatives aligned with Kazakhstan’s strategic position in the "Belt and Road Initiative." A key component of the program mandates the organization of offline seminars and conferences in both countries, as well as fostering travel between them. Notably, the program requires at least one Kazakh researcher to spend six months to a year working in Chinese research institutes, supported by China’s international talent fund. This exchange is designed to deepen scientific cooperation while promoting cultural understanding and long-term partnerships.
The competitive selection process, which saw only ten grants awarded across four areas, highlighted interdisciplinary cooperation and sustainable research outcomes as standout criteria. The innovative approaches of the NU projects, paired with strong track records of collaboration between Chinese and Kazakh researchers, impressed reviewers.
A notable outcome of the awarded grants is the planned SEDS conference, designed to enhance NU's research collaboration with international scholars. Through workshops, networking, and knowledge sharing, the conference will provide a platform for early-career researchers to engage with global scholars, promoting joint projects and access to international research networks. This opportunity will elevate NU’s academic profile, fostering future research advancements while contributing to Kazakhstan’s broader academic goals.
The awarded projects and proposed activities not only reinforce NU’s commitment to academic excellence but also position the university as a key player in global research initiatives, enhancing its visibility and reputation within the international academic community.
