On April 10th, the School of Engineering and Digital Sciences (NU SEDS) at Nazarbayev University hosted the inaugural Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition during the NU SEDS Research Week, dedicated to commemorating Kazakhstan Scientific Workers Day.
The 3MT® competition, born at the University of Queensland in 2008, has since garnered global recognition, with over 900 universities from 85 countries participating. Marking its debut at Nazarbayev University, the event showcased the institution's commitment to advancing research endeavors. Eight talented PhD students from various departments of NU SEDS had to condense years of work into three-minute presentations, delivering compelling talks.
The competition not only provided a platform for students to refine their public speaking skills but also fostered a vibrant research culture at Nazarbayev University.
The event was attended by members of the Managing Council, NU leadership, faculty members, and students. Shazim Memon, Acting Vice-Dean for Research at NU SEDS, moderated the event, offering an insightful overview of the competition's rules, judging criteria, and prizes.
Among the eight presentations, Akmaral Agibayeva from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering emerged victorious with her thesis titled "The Air We Breathe: Hidden Danger of Air Pollution." Her research delved into the critical issue of air quality degradation, elucidating the health risks associated with airborne pollutants.
Zhuldyz Yelzhanova, from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, emerged as a double awardee, securing the titles of 3MT® Runner-Up and 3MT® People’s Choice—an extraordinary feat recognized by audience votes. Yelzhanova's research focused on "Perovskite Solar Cells: In Search of a Secret Sauce," aiming to enhance the performance and stability of this promising photovoltaic technology.
In addition to the competition, the event featured the SEDS Student Research Excellence Awards ceremony, honoring 15 outstanding students for their publications in the top 10% of journals according to CiteScore. This accolade aligns with NU's strategic vision of ranking among the top 20% of the world's universities by 2030. Notably, this ceremony was organized for the first time in the history of the school during SEDS Research Week.
Acting President Adesida Ilesanmi and Acting Dean Yelyzaveta Arkhangelsky distributed certificates to recognize the exemplary achievements of the following students: Gerald Davin Aventian, Saddam Husain, Yerkanat Kanafin, Bekarys Omarov, Sakengali Kazhiyev, Balnur Zhaidarbek, Aigerim Nurbayeva, Kashif Nazir, Torebek Toregozhin, Arailym Serikbay, Alexey Remizov, Yerassyl Olzhabay, Zhandos Zhakipov, Alfarabi Imashev, and Madi Makin.
Congratulations to all the participants and awardees for their outstanding achievements, showcasing the spirit of academic excellence at Nazarbayev University's School of Engineering and Digital Sciences.
