On May 21, 2024, the IEEE Kazakhstan Subsection, in collaboration with Nazarbayev University's Provost Office and School of Engineering and Digital Sciences (NU SEDS) hosted a series of research seminars on semiconductor technology. The event featured two distinguished speakers from the International College of Semiconductor Technology (ICST) at National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), Hsinchu, Taiwan.
The event commenced with opening remarks from Associate Professor Muhammad Akhtar of the ECE Department at NU SEDS, who also serves as the Vice Chair for IEEE Kazakhstan Subsection and as a counselor to the NU-IEEE Student Branch. Following his welcoming address, Dr. Carlo Molardi, Chair of the IEEE Kazakhstan Subsection, provided an overview of the subsection's activities. Subsequently, NU SEDS student Adilkhan Alpysbay presented on the activities and achievements of the NU-IEEE Student Branch.
Professor Dr. Hiroshi Iwai, Vice Dean and Distinguished Chair Professor, delivered an engaging presentation titled "Past, Present, and Future of Integrated Circuits Technologies." His talk delved into the evolution of integrated circuit (IC) technologies, emphasizing the role of nano-CMOS advancements in the progression of artificial intelligence. Professor Iwai also addressed the challenges of heat generation and rising costs, proposing strategies to maintain performance enhancements in IC technology.
Following Professor Iwai's seminar, Professor Dr. Edward Yi Chang, Dean and Chair Professor, discussed "E-mode GaN HEMT with Ferroelectric Charge Trap Gate Stack for EV and PV Applications." Professor Chang introduced an innovative method for achieving normally-off operation in GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs), aimed at improving the safety and efficiency of power switching modules in electric vehicles. The seminar highlighted the device's high positive threshold voltage, low on-resistance, high current density, and high breakdown voltage.
The event concluded with closing remarks from Nazarbayev University's Provost and Acting President, Ilesanmi Adesida. He expressed sincere gratitude to the attendees, highlighting the remarkable opportunity they've provided. Stressing the pivotal role of collaboration, he emphasized its power in cultivating innovation and knowledge sharing within academic community. His call to action resonated, urging NU professors and students to embrace active collaborations.
The event wrapped up with the presentation of certificates of appreciation and tokens of gratitude from the university.
