NU SEDS Professor Zhumabay Bakenov Elected to the Kazakh National Academy of Sciences

Nazarbayev University’s School of Engineering and Digital Sciences (SEDS) proudly celebrates the election of Professor Zhumabay Bakenov, Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, as a member of the prestigious Kazakh National Academy of Sciences under the Kazakh President.

Prof. Bakenov, who holds a Doctor of Engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, is a leading expert in energy conversion and storage materials. He is also the Director of the Center for Energy and Advanced Materials Science at the National Laboratory Astana, where he spearheads cutting-edge research in next-generation energy solutions.

Throughout his career, Prof. Bakenov has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2021 “Best Researcher Award” by the Government of Kazakhstan and the 2019 Scopus Award “Researcher of the Year.” His research group, the largest international team at NU, focuses on advanced energy storage systems and functional nanomaterials.

Prof. Bakenov’s extensive contributions to science and education, including participation in global research projects and the supervision of emerging scientists, continue to inspire the next generation of innovators at NU SEDS.
